CHIHUAHUA
According to Shopareview, Chihuahua is one of the 31 states of Mexico, and the largest with an area of 244,938 km²; it is located in the northwestern part of the country. The northern border is primarily the Rio Bravo del Norte ( Rio Grande ) and Texas and New Mexico in the United States. The states of Sonora and Sinaloa are to the west, Durango to the south and Coahuila to the east. The majority of the state is desert, however, there are also areas with significant rainfall and green forests. In fact, the Chihuahua has a larger forest area than any other Mexican state.
The state is named after its capital, Chihuahua. The origin of the name is not known with certainty, but it is ancient and dates from the time before the arrival of the Spaniards, it is believed that the name is derived from the words of the Nahuatl people xicuahua (dry, sandy place).
Chihuahua played an important role in the Mexican Revolution, and was the battleground for the revolutionary forces led by Pancho Villa and the federal forces.
One of Chihuahua’s best known natural phenomena is the Barranca del Cobre, the Copper Gorge, a magnificent system of gorges that can be compared to the Grand Canyon of the United States.
TIMELINE:
1916-1917 – The Mexican revolutionary and general Pancho Villa sent troops into the United States on March 9, 1916 and 17 were killed (Read here ). The Pancho Villa expedition began from March 14, 1916 to February 7, 1917, and was a military retaliatory operation by the United States Army that fought against Pancho Villa’s paramilitary forces during the Mexican Revolution, which lasted from 1910-1920. Of later known American officers, Lieutenant George S. Patton participated in the expedition. The expedition was a limited success, Pancho Villa escaped capture.
1920 – Pancho Villa, who began his career as a murderer and horse thief, but quickly worked his way up to a position as Mexico’s most colorful revolutionary hero, retired in 1920. When he entered politics legally in 1923, he was assassinated. July 20th. One can visit his villa in Hidalgo del Parral where he lived until his death.
CAMPECHE
The Mexican state of Campeche was long part of the Yucatán and shared its history until the middle of the 19th century. Campeche shares borders with the Mexican states of Yucatán to the northeast, Quintana Roo to the east and Tabasco to the southwest. To the south, the state borders the province of Peten in Guatemala, to the southeast to Belize, and to the west to the Gulf of Mexico.
In addition to the capital of the same name, Campeche, there are, among others, the cities of Champotón, Ciudad del Carmen and Escárcega, in addition to many important but lesser known / visited Mayan ruins, such as Becan, Calacmul, Civiltuk, Dzibilnocac, Etzna, Hochob, Holactun, Rio Bec, Uxul, Xicalango, Xpuhil and Xtampak.
The geographical spread of the Mayan civilization stretched across the southern Mexican states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatán Peninsula: Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Yucatán. The Mayan region also extended throughout the northern Central American region and to present-day Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras.
TIMELINE:
1500 BCE – In the pre-classical or formative age, the Olmec civilization began to develop and flourish in places such as San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán (o.1200-900 BCE) and La Venta (c.900-400 BCE).
1540 – San Francisco de Campeche is founded by Francisco de Montejo.
COAHUILA
Coahuila (formal name: Coahuila de Zaragoza) is one of the 31 states of Mexico. It is located in the northern part of the country. To the north, Coahuila shares a 512 km border with the state of Texas in the United States. Coahuila shares a border with the Mexican states of Nuevo Leon to the east, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas to the south, and Durango and Chihuahua to the west. With an area of 151,571 km², it is Mexico’s third largest state. In 2000, Coahuila had an estimated population of 2,300,000.
The capital of Coahuila is called Saltillo. The cities of Monclova, Piedras Negras, Ciudad Acuña and Torreón are also located in the state.
TIMELINE:
1911 – The Torreón Massacre takes place on 13-15. May, which led to the killing of over 300 Chinese city dwellers by Francisco I. Madero’s revolutionary force. An investigation into the massacre, was concluded to be an unprovoked act of racial hatred.
FEDERAL DISTRICT OF MEXICO
The Federal District of Mexico or Distrito Federal (“DF”) is an area of the state of Mexico that is not part of any of the Mexican states but is administered by the Federal Government of Mexico. Most of Mexico City is located within the federal district. In terms of area, the city covers both the Mexican Federal District (a special administrative unit similar to Washington DC in the United States) and part of the state of Mexico, in the northern part of the Federal District. Mexico City has one of the largest populations in the world, estimated at 30 million. It is also one of the largest urban areas in the world, Greater Mexico City forms a species ellipse that spans 40 kilometers from east to west and 60 from north to south.
The state of Mexico borders the DF on three sides, as well as against the state of Morelos in the more rural and mountainous south. The pear-shaped federal district covers a land area of 1,479 km², with a population of 8,591,000 according to the 2000 census.
