Yearbook 2008
Brunei. In June, a British judge issued an arrest warrant for Prince Jefri Bolkiah, brother of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who ruled Brunei for over 40 years. Jefri, who now resides in the UK, has been in feud with his brother for over ten billion who disappeared during Jefri’s time as finance minister for over ten years. The order to arrest the prince anywhere in the EU came after he refused to stand for a hearing in the High Court in London. He was accused of breaking a previous court order to hand over £ 3 billion to the Government of Brunei. Jefri rebuffed the charges, saying that after a verdict in 2000, he had returned the missing billions after a settlement with his brother.
Brunei was excluded from the Beijing 2008 Olympics as the country had not registered its competitors, including a 15-year-old swimmer, on time. The International Olympic Committee, in its own statement, tried in the longest time to Brunei to report its athletes but without results.
