Cape Verde. Prior to the local elections in May, Cape
Verde
introduced for the first time a biometric voter register
based on the fingerprints of voters who could be read in the
polling stations. In the election, the opposition party Movimento Para a Democracia (Democracy Movement, MPA)
strengthened its position ahead of the next parliamentary
elections in 2011.

After four years of negotiations, Cape Verde was admitted to the
World Trade Organization (WTO) in May. According to
Countryaah reports, Cabo Verde has a healthy and
stable economy following African conditions with estimated
growth in 2008 of about 7.7 percent, well above the African
average. Tourism is an increasingly important source of
income.
